Is It Time For A Safer Car?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 7 months ago

Whether you’ve recently had kids or have recently moved to an area with more dangerous roads, buying a safer vehicle can often be a worthwhile decision. That said, there are other ways to be safer on the road. Here are some factors worth considering when upping your road safety.

Could you become a safer driver?

Driving convictions are usually a good sign that you need to ease the pace. Of course, some convictions can be handed out wrongly and there are law firms such as Romano Law PC that can contest these. However, regular speeding and DUI charges could a cause for concern.

Advanced driving courses can benefit both those that may have trouble with speeding and those on the opposite end of the spectrum who may be too overcautious. Such a course could help you to become safer, which could eliminate the need for a new vehicle. It’s also possible to take specific lessons for situations such as motorway driving, driving in the snow and driving on rural country roads.

    Modifying your current vehicle

You may not necessarily have to buy a new vehicle – a few modifications to your current car could suffice. This is popular amongst owners of classic cars which may have been built with less stringent safety rules in place. Companies such as Seat Belts Plus may be useful for shopping for a more secure seatbelt. You may also want to consider installing air bags.

Other upgrades such as roll cages, anti-locking brakes and updated suspension can all further improve a car’s safety, although may all be expensive making it more practical to buy a newer car. With old cars check for failed rubber seals or piping cracks as these can all be hazards waiting to happen.

    Choosing a new safe vehicle

If an advanced driving course isn’t the answer and you don’t want to update your current car, then buying a new safer car is the way forward. Modern cars are the safest whist SUVs will generally provide the best passenger safety if only due to their size (although they won’t provide much pedestrian safety).

There are lots of ways to judge a car’s safety. In older models, crash fatality statistics can tell you a lot about how safe a car is in the event of an accident. RoSPA offer a database of different car models and their crash stats. Euro NCAP meanwhile are good for researching the safety of modern cars – this company is responsible for crash tests of every new car. Along with how well a car crumples and effectiveness of seatbelts, Euro NCAP looks for active safety features such as automatic emergency braking systems and anti-locking brakes that may prevent a crash in the first place.

The likes of What Car regularly give out safety car awards, which can also be a good all-round indicator of what constitutes a safe car. Insurance claims stats can also be handy, although they may be more indicative of which cars have higher insurance premiums rather than which ones are most dangerous.
