The Models That Made Harley Davidson The Epitome Of Cool

Posted by Ben Davidson about 3 months ago
Since its inception over a hundred years ago, Harley Davidson has become the status quo of cool motorcycles, with a few exceptions. Hell, Harley has become the status quo of cool. Full stop. The end. Period. These are air-cooled, heavyweight bikes so big and badass they’ve snared Hollywood icons for as long as history can remember, snaring them like moths to the flame as the coolest of the cool went in search of something that would add armour to their image.

That brings us to the only question worth asking, a question that roars and rumbles with the same ferocity as one of their Twin Cam 1700 six-speed beasts, and that is, what are the greatest Harley Davidson’s of all time?

    1. The 11F
Way back in the early parts of 1916, the 11F revolutionised the motorcycle world, taking the stakes and hurling them into the stratosphere. Don’t believe us, just look at auto.howstuffworks.com. This was the first Harley with a three-speed transmission, an automatic oiling system and an intake system so monstrous it pumped out a nerve-jangling 11 horses, stress the name. This was the first two-wheel cocktail that mixed comfort, style and power.

    2. The Duo-Glide
Way back in 1958 when cool was experiencing a new take on the concept through the quiffs of Elvis and James Dean, Harley made a bike that was truly comfortable to ride. The rear suspension could even be adjusted to accommodate a heavyset rider, those riding two-up or those just riding off into the sunset on their own. This bike really is a perfect balance, bringing together the old and the new in perfect harmony.

    3. The V-Rod Muscle
The 2002 edition was made famous for throwing it back to the drag past that Harley once enjoyed. It had 115 horses on board and pumped out well over 8000 rpm, which was more than enough to see that rear wheel spin and spin until the smell of burning rubber filled your lungs. If you were to visit Texasbestusedmotorcycles.com then you may be lucky enough to find one for yourself. It could be a 2002, it could be a 2011; whatever it is you’ll find yourself smiling like never before.

    4. The Dyna Wide Glide
Look, this model is by no means the most practical bike to own. It just isn’t. But when has practical ever been fun, and that is exactly the compromise they made on with the Dyna Wide. The lower seat position, the thick rear end, the sawn-off fender and the “Tommy Gun” exhaust; it all came together to create a fantastic-looking bike. So, if it is cruising (in a straight line) and turning heads that floats your boat then this is the bike for you.

    5. The EL Knucklehead
In the year 1936, the great-grandfather of modern Harley’s was spawned. It was the birth of the overhead valve setup and a bike that produced 1000cc. But that isn’t the reason why this bike is so revered; that boasting right goes to the rebellion this bike stood for. The sexy lines, the bold colours, the size and power; this was the year the American Motorcycle changed forever.
