A Real Biting Point... Small Car Issues That Can Cause Big Problems

Posted by Ben Davidson about 3 months ago
While we run into our fair share of common car issues, there are some problems that we tend to paper over. Or we don't do anything about it until it is too late, it's always important to make sure that your car is in general working order, but let's have a look at some of the car problems that, while minor, can turn into dangerous ones if you're not careful!

Rust
While you may think a little bit of superficial rust is nothing to be worried about, the impact of rust on your structural integrity is something that needs to be looked at sooner rather than later. If rust is left for long enough, it can eat through the surface of your car which could allow contaminants like mud or dirt to get to the metal workings underneath your car, which makes it a ticking time bomb. If the rust makes its way to the metal framing or the chassis, it can be very dangerous for the car. Without this skeleton for your car, if you get caught up in an accident, they could be a higher chance of injury for you and the passengers. And if you end up in a crash, and you need to claim back the car fair market value, you may not able to get exactly what you paid for. So if you do spot a bit of rust, it's important for you to take care of it there and then, and also think about your overall protection methods, so, are you doing enough?

Fuel Lines
When your fuel lines get old, leaks will start to appear. This is why you need to check them on a regular basis, and if you don't check your fuel lines, and find that you are leaking, it could end up without a happy ending. Checking fuel lines involves looking at the joint between the carburetor and the fuel line, as well as looking at the other joints in the car, gradually working your way towards the tank. If you feel that you're not able to do it effectively, it's always best to get a professional to do it. The first sign of a leak is usually a smell of petrol (apart from when you have just filled up the tank), and other symptoms include if you have any issues starting the car or you have flooded the carburetor. Also keep an eye out for a damp patch underneath the car. And leaks may only occur at specific times, it doesn't have to be a continuous leak, such as if the car is tilted in a certain angle or only when the tank is full.

Windshield Wipers
A very simple one, if your windshield wipers aren't up to code, and you've got issues seeing out your windscreen, it is much cheaper to replace windshield wipers than it is to replace a whole car! If you need new wipers, so it's best to look for the proper symptoms, including streaking water, the sound of squeaking when the wipers are in use and the wipers leaving a milky film on your windshield.

Yes, these are small issues at the outset, but when ignored, they can turn into big problems after a while. So make sure you stop looking after your car properly!
