Easy Rider To Ghost Rider: A History Of Motorcycles In Hollywood

Posted by Ben Davidson about 14 days ago
Whether it’s Bond in an Aston Martin or Marty McFly in a DeLorean, cars get a lot of action in the movies. After all, film watchers love a chase through a crowded city or the hills of California. But, what about motorcycles – where’s the love? Well, bikes do get a lot of action too, but just not as much as the cars. So, to set the record straight, the good folks at Wheels On Edge thought they’d *walk you through a short history of motorcycle Hollywood.

*It’s more of an adrenaline-filled journey, so be sure to hold on tight boys and girls.

    Easy Rider

Released in 1969, the film explores the relationship of two drug dealers with Middle America. However, the spiritual epiphany is nothing to the joy of watching Fonda and Hopper ride two Harleys. Back then, riding was less of an art form and more of an experience. There were no complicated electronics and GPS systems to blight the feeling of power and nature. Instead, two cool dudes were taking in the sights of a beautiful country. Don’t fear though because Cafe Racer still takes the era seriously. There, you’ll find buyers and sellers looking to add to their collection, and you can join in the fun.

    Rambo: First Blood

John Rambo is known for his unparalleled killing style and slightly over the top reactions. Did he need to destroy a town for feeling hard done to? Probably not, but he did it anyway and jumped on a hog in the process. Yep, 13 years later in 1982, Sly Stallone is murdering bad guys, avoiding gunfire and quarrelling with the sheriff on a Yamaha XT 250. A lot less bulky than a Harley Davidson, the 250 resembled a dirt bike and was perfect a quick getaway into the woods. It’s lucky he had one by his side, then!

    Top Gun

Wasn’t that a film about fighter pilots, brotherly love and deadly rivalries? Indeed it was, but Top Gun also featured Tom ‘Mr Hollywood’ Cruise himself on a Kawasaki GPZ 900. It’s hard to remember, but there was also a beautiful girl, a gorgeous backdrop, and a flash of Cruise’s pearly whites. The motorcycle itself was built for power and speed, the frame less bulky than a Harley and thicker than an XT 250. In 1986, it was the ultimate symbol of manhood and everyone wanted a piece of the action. The same couldn’t be said for warplanes however, which makes you wonder whether the director had his priorities in order.

    Ghost Rider

Okay, so Francis Ford Coppola’s grandson is a bit of a caricature of himself, and Ghost Rider wasn’t his best work. But, the motorcycle itself was enough to watch Cage and Mendez fight the devil and save his soul. The Panhead Chopper was a throwback to the earlier years of American muscle, and it was a sight for sore eyes. So there was a lot of CGI; that’s how movie magic works, folks. It was on fire, after all.

Notable mentions have to go to Terminator, Nolan’s Batman and The Matrix. Do you have any you Hollywood hogs to add?
