Awesome Truck Driving Tips that will Keep You Safe on the Road

Posted by Ben Davidson about 3 months ago

If you drive a truck then you will know how important it is for you to have complete control over your vehicle at all times. This is easier said than done but if you take the time to understand your truck, your driving ability and more, then you can be sure to get a really good result out of your journeys.

    Be Alert

The first thing that you need to do is be alert. You need to know everything that is going on around you and you also need to look way ahead of the road as well. When you are going down the motorway, make sure that you have an escape route if possible. This involves trying to see who is in front of you, who is behind you and more. Being well-rested really helps here, and it will boost your level of concentration as well. If you do not feel alert when you are behind the wheel then this will cause a ton of issues for you at a later date and you may even be putting yourself at risk as well.

    Weather Reports

You need to be aware of weather reports before you go out on a trip and you also need to keep an eye on them while you are travelling as well. A good trucker will always be prepared for bad weather and they will also take the right precautions as well. You can never plan too far ahead, and the weather that you are up against may even determine how you secure your load as well. For example, if you already know how to use ratchet straps then consider looking up how to combine them with other load-securing methods so that you can stay as safe as possible at every stage of your journey.

    Delivery Spots

It is also a good idea for you to check out the delivery spots on foot if you can. This is often ignored by drivers and it can cause you a ton of problems if you are not careful. When you are out making a delivery, even if it is to a new customer, you need to find somewhere you can park safely before you leave your truck and scope out the place. Trucks often get stuck in docking facilities and they can’t manoeuvre the truck properly either. If you check out the location on foot first then you can easily look out for any ditches, fire hydrants and more. Before you drive your truck in, make a mental note of the hazards and make sure that you are prepared to handle the drop-off.

    Be Cautious at Night

At night, you really do need to exercise caution. This is especially the case if you are trying to manoeuvre in a very tight situation. A lot of truck drivers think that they are going to pull over at the side of the road, but they actually end up in a ditch or they even hit light posts as well. This is something that you will want to avoid at all cost, but by taking your time and by being extra cautious, you can really help yourself to stay safe.

    Leave Room

It’s super important that you leave plenty of space in front of your vehicle. It can be incredibly frustrating if you are travelling at 50mph and everyone else on the road is travelling at 60mph, but it can keep you from getting into trouble. If you are able to leave a cushion between you and the other cars then this will protect you and it will also protect other people as well. if anything does go wrong then there is a high chance that it will happen in front of you so by giving yourself more room, you have way more time to correct the situation before it becomes disastrous.

    Try Not to Change Lanes

Cars are always trying to change lanes and dodge other cars, but when you are a truck driver, this is something that you will want to avoid. Make sure that you move carefully, and be aware of your blind spots. Accidents are much more likely to happen when you change lanes, especially if you are driving a truck. For this reason, you need to maintain your lane position as much as possible. If you keep in your lane and something happens then there is a high chance that you will not be at fault, and this can save you a ton of stress, time and money.
