Off-Roading: How To Choose The Perfect Vehicle

Posted by Ben Davidson about 6 months ago

If you’ve given off-roading a try and have decided that you really enjoy getting out and about and cruising across country instead of on the roads, then you might be thinking about treating yourself to your own off-road vehicle. After all, if you’re going to be an off-roader, you need a vehicle of your own to destroy, don’t you?

When it comes to finding that perfect off-roading vehicle, there are a few factors that you need to take into account. What it’s important to understand is that a vehicle doesn’t have to be brand new to make a good off-roading option, second-hand vehicle can work just as well. The key to success for choosing the ideal vehicle for off-roading is knowing what you’re looking for and what vehicle type you want to invest in - that’s what’s important!

Bearing that in mind, below are some useful tips for finding the perfect off-roading vehicle.

Look out for these design features

When choosing a vehicle that performs well off-road, you need to look out for certain design features. When it comes to a car’s off-road power, factors like its ground clearance, gearing, departure angles, and approach will impact how well it works on and off-road. Other features that off-roading vehicles should have include a wider wheelbase, locking front and back differentials, and driver controlled traction control.

    Suspension is key

For off-roading vehicles, the most important feature is high-quality suspension that is designed to be flexible and strong. For this reason, a large number of off-roaders choose to customise their vehicles to make them more off-road terrain friendly. There are plenty of options for off road built truck upgrades that you could take advantage of, but one of the most important of which is updating the suspension, if it’s not adequate. High movement joints are recommended for off-roading cars as this allows for more flex in the suspension and keeps the tires on the ground in rough terrain.

    Slow crawling is required

Not every four by four is designed to offer adequate slow crawling capabilities, which can be an issue. While you don’t want to have to be doing slow crawling while off-roading, sometimes the terrain calls for it, which is why you need a vehicle that is designed to be able to slow crawl effectively. Slow crawling is what vehicles do over rocky terrain, to help protect the vehicle and the suspension. The slower the vehicle can effectively crawl while supporting the suspension the better, as this makes navigating this kind of rocky terrain easier and safer.

Choosing the perfect vehicle for off-roading is no easy task as there’s a lot that you need to consider and take into account. Always read the reviews for any off-roading vehicle, regardless of whether you’re shopping for a brand new or preloved four by four. It’s essential that you are clued up regarding how well a vehicle performs on tough terrain, to ensure that you are making the right choice purchasing it.
