Why Do So Many Drivers Give Up?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 6 months ago

Even though it may seem like there are thousands of drivers out on the road, you might be surprised to hear that there aren’t as many as there might be. In fact, if everyone who has passed their test were to get out on the streets, roads would certainly feel a lot busier. However, there are lots of drivers out there who don’t drive anymore. You might think this is strange as driving is so essential to some people, but there are actually quite a few really good reasons why some car owners might simply never get behind the wheel again. Read on to find out more!

    Failing Health

Lots of people’s health starts to deteriorate as they get older and, as a result, they might not be able to drive anymore. Certain health conditions, such as many eye conditions like glaucoma, can make it difficult for them to see, which could pose a risk for them behind the wheel. As people get older and start to develop illnesses like arthritis, they might not be able to use the pedals and controls in the car as quickly as they might need to when out on the road. Generally speaking, a doctor will sign you off from driving if they think it is in your best interest, although some people give up on driving themselves if they lose confidence in the driver’s seat.

Getting On The Wrong Side Of The Law

Of course, some people are forced to not drive even if they want to. This is usually because they have committed a serious traffic offence and have had their license taken off them. In some cases, it is possible to get the license back after a certain period of time. Those who have been caught drink driving might have to take part in DUI classes to do so. However, some offences and crimes are so serious, that they carry a lifetime ban.

    The Wrong Kind Of Car

Some people just have bad experiences while driving, and these are enough to put them off getting behind the wheel again. Usually, this is because they bought the wrong kind of car in the first place. As cars are designed for various purposes, it’s important that you carefully think about the type you need. For instance, if you live in an urban area, you probably don’t need a four-wheel drive. When you have the right kind of car, it should be a dream to drive.

    Past Traumas

Unfortunately, traffic accidents are still quite common and some can be very severe. People who are involved can find them very traumatic and all of this trauma can stay with them for some time. As a result, they may not want to get into a car again, let alone behind the steering wheel. Thankfully, though, there are ways to get past these traumas and to rebuild confidence. Lots of people with these issues find that talking to a therapist can work wonders.

Is there a reason why you might not drive as much as you’d like?
