Responsibility As A Road User: Could You Do More?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 months ago
If you’re wondering whether you could do more to keep yourself and others safe on the road then here are some pieces of advice to help you become a more responsible road user.

    Only drive without distractions.

You might already be a safe driver, but there’s always more we can all do to increase our road awareness and responsibility. Even experienced road users can lose their temper when they see someone driving recklessly or get behind the wheel at the end of a long day and lack concentration because they’re stressed, tired, or distracted in some other sense. You should only ever drive your vehicle if you’re free of distractions. You need to focus on things happening around you rather than things happening inside the car or your own head. Of course, it’s important not to be distracted by things happening outside the car either. If you see a reckless driver then keeping your distance is the smartest move. Being focused and calm behind the wheel will make you a much more responsible driver.

    Make your car safer.

Another thing you could do to become a more responsible road user is kit out your car with more safety features. If it’s a modern vehicle then it’ll also come included with certain features in line with regulations and laws in your country. But certain additional features aren’t always included in vehicles even though they could make your car so much safer. You should do some shopping around. Get a sensor for your vehicle to warn you of proximity to other objects, for example. You might also want to get some upgrades if certain parts of your car have worn out. This is definitely important for bigger vehicles. You could get some new 4x4 tyres for your off-road vehicle if your current ones have worn out. That would make your car safer on the road (and off the road if you use it for that purpose). Certain upgrades can go a long way towards making your car safer.

    Look after your vehicle.

Obviously, fitting your vehicle with new safety features will help you to drive responsibly on the road, but the best way to keep your car safe is to simply look after it. Fancy technology won’t mean a thing if your car breaks down because it’s not been maintained properly. Learn how to take care of your vehicle; watch YouTube tutorials if necessary. You need to check the oil level, tyre pressure, and other important components of your car on a regular basis to keep it in good shape. That way, if you notice that it isn’t performing as well as usual or something seems different then you can do something about it before a proper problem develops.

Pay attention to any warning lights on your dashboard too. They’re trying to tell you something. Don’t ignore a problem when it develops. If there’s a chip in your windscreen then get it fixed before it develops into a crack. It’s smarter to pay a little bit of money to get your car repaired now rather than paying a lot of money (and risking your safety) when it breaks down later. Additionally, make sure you keep your car clean. Dirt can turn into rust, and rust can erode the important components of your vehicle. In other words, washing your car is worthwhile in terms of the functionality as well as the appearance of your vehicle.
