But Officer ! What To Do When You're Arrested

Posted by Ben Davidson about 3 months ago

For anyone who enjoys old cars and good TV shows, the Lucifer series with Tom Ellis is a pleasure for the eyes. Lucifer Morningstar drives a classic 1962 Corvette C1 convertible. The car, entirely black, has appealed to the viewers from the first moment it appeared on screen.

Incidentally, it also was Lucifer’s first apparition and first interaction with the police department in Los Angeles. As Lucifer is stopped for speeding, he attempts – successfully – to bribe the officer before carrying on his journey.

In real life, of course, we all know that offering money to a police officer is not the right way to deal with an arrest. However, if there’s one thing you can learn from Lucifer, is that sometimes saying the right thing can save you a lot of troubles. It just turns out that when you’re the devil, bribery is the right thing to say!

Tyres not safe? I’m on the way to get them replaced

You’re a road user; consequently, you have a responsibility to keep the road safe. Driving safely is, naturally, a priority. But you also should ensure that your car is road legal at all times. For instance, the majority of winter accidents occur as a result of low tyre adhesion to the road. While you don’t have to switch for winter tyres, you can ensure that your car never drives on worn out tyres. If you are stopped by an officer regarding the state of your tyres, there is unfortunately not much you say to defend yourself. You can explain, of course, that you are on your way to get them replaced – which would let you get out of troubles this time. However, you’d better be telling the truth!

    After a party? Be compliant

In England and Wales, the drink-drive limit is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Be careful as in Scotland; the limit is different from the rest of the UK with 50 milligrammes of alcohol! How much you can drink to stay safely under the limit depends on a variety of factors; however, it is your responsibility to ensure you are legally allowed to take the road. When arrested, it’s best not to resist and take the time to explain the situation. While drunk driving is a criminal offence, there are exceptional situations in which a judge can be lenient with the offender. You are unlikely to get entirely out of troubles; but the more compliant you are, the better it will be for your case.

    Road accident? Provide documents

When your car is involved in a road accident, it’s essential to stop, provide your name and address, and insurance details as soon as possible. If you fail to stop or provide contact details, you commit an offence. If a police officer is on site, you should also make sure you answer all potential questions they might have. When nobody is on site, you should report the collision to the police within 24 hours. It can be helpful as well to take pictures of the accident.

Contrary to the common belief, police officers are there to help you on the road. They try to make the road safer for everyone, and consequently, if they stop your car, they have a good reason. Ensuring you react calmly and provide all the necessary information will help to protect yourself in the long term.
