Diving Down The Repair Hole: Car Fixes You Should Never Do!

Posted by Ben Davidson about 7 months ago

It's always tempting for us to try and save a bit of money by doing car repairs ourselves. After all, it's not that hard, is it? We know our car pretty well, so surely we can at least do the majority of these fixes? And now, with the abundance of resources online, it seems to be pushing us in the direction of doing this. But, there are so many fixes you should never even attempt…

    The Electrics

A common issue, but one that you need to approach with caution. You can see on https://libertycollisionreno.com/electrical-problems-new-cars how it’s even a problem with new cars, but because there are so many sensors, computers, and connectors plugged into the electrical wiring, one false move can result in a very expensive problem. Instead, just stick to swapping a new relay or fuse. Anything further than that, you could run the risk of short wiring the entire electrical unit. But little car parts like fuses are easily fixed by yourself, and on sites like https://www.breakeryard.com/car-parts/audi you can find pretty much any piece specific to your make and model.

    Transmission Issues

If you want to see the mechanical equivalent of a maze, the bell housing of a car's transmission is as close as you're going to get! A lot of people believe swapping the transmission is a straightforward process, but to do this, you've got to get all the sensors out, which can cause additional damage to the vehicle (as well as yourself) if you don't do it right. A lot of people prefer to rebuild a transmission, and it's easy to see why. But it's not sensible to undertake this yourself.

    Bodywork

Any paint issue or repairing damaged body panels isn't as straightforward as it would appear. It's a very expensive and time-consuming process. You need to get professionals to do this because if you do it wrong, you can end up making your car look worse than it did beforehand. Bubbling and sanding gauges are two of the many issues you can get from trying to repair a body panel. If you try to paint, there can be an issue with overspray, as well as the dreaded “orange peel”.

    Replacing The Windshield

As one of the most expensive repairs, it's something we can all dread. But instead of trying to fix it yourself, by getting a used one from a junkyard, you might be surprised that by the time you purchase the adhesive, the window trim pieces and the clips, it works out around the same cost as the quote from the professionals. A shoddy job doesn't just mean you having to go back to the professionals to get it done, but in the meantime, any leak will ruin the interiors, adding further costs and anxiety to your driving experience.

Driving your car should be an enjoyable experience, but if you find yourself diving down the rabbit hole of car repairs, you may find that your car isn't the source of your Saturday afternoon enjoyment anymore.
