Car Maintenance Doesn't Need To Be Costly

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 months ago

As anyone who owns a car will tell you, running it can be expensive. But with a few modifications here and there, you can run a car on the cheap. How? Let’s take a look.

    Buy Used Tyres

Buying tires brand new every time the tread wears down can be very expensive. New tires usually start at around $50 and go up from there. But if you just want to keep your car on the road legally, there’s no real reason to go for brand new tires. You can often save a lot of money on used tires that still have plenty of tread left. The great thing about buying used tires is that you know exactly what you’re getting. You can inspect the tires yourself to see whether they are a reasonable price or not and negotiate with the dealer to get more money off.

Repair Your Windshield As Soon As You See A Chip

Windshield repair cost goes down the earlier you can identify and solve problems. Repairing a small chip is much cheaper than waiting for it to turn into a crack. Chips can be filled with resin. Cracks cannot be fixed, and the windshield must be replaced.

Use The Oil Grade For Your Vehicle

Your engine needs oil to work at its best. But if you’ve ever browsed the oils for sale at a filling station, you’ll have noticed that there is a wide variety from which you can choose. It’s always a good idea to buy oil as close as you can find to the manufacturer’s specifications. Different oil weights are suitable for different engines, and so you want to make sure that you have the right oil in yours to ensure continued operation of your vehicle.

    Go For Standard Spark Plugs

Some mechanics will try to sell you on the idea that you should choose more expensive spark plugs because they will last longer and perform better. And while it’s true that they may perform better and last longer, they still may not represent good value for money. A spark plug that costs 50 percent more but only lasts 10 percent longer is not a good deal.

Do Some Of The Maintenance Yourself

Granted, you have to take your car to the MOT garage once per year if it’s more than three years old, but do you need to get a service at the same time? Or can you do some of that stuff yourself?

It turns out that there are a lot of things that you can do by yourself on your car, for instance, changing the front brake pads, replacing the battery, tuning up the engine, changing the air filter and replacing the spark plugs. Replacing the spark plugs yourself could save you between $85 and $170 compared to going to a professional mechanic.

Inflate Your Tyres To The Manufacturer’s Specification

Finally, take a look at your owner’s manual and check the pressure in your tires. A lack of air pressure could lead them to rub on one side or another, wearing out the tire unevenly and leading to tracking issues.
