Which Car Is Right For You? A Guide To Narrowing Down Your Options

Posted by Ben Davidson about 8 months ago

If you took a second to search online for cars for sale, you would be greeted with pages and pages of results and adverts. It’s great to have a choice, but if you don’t know exactly what you want, how do you go about narrowing down your options? If you’re wondering which car is right for you, here’s a guide to creating a shortlist.

How do you plan to use your car?

One of the most important considerations to bear in mind when swapping your car is how you plan to use the new vehicle. Do you drive long distances for work? Do you have pets or children? Is your car used for work purposes? Is your mileage limited? Do you live in a city? Some types of cars are much better suited to certain lifestyles than others. If you live in an urban area, and you only drive short distances, go for a compact car or a hatchback. If you have a family, look for a safe, reliable, spacious estate or an MPV. If you fancy something practical but a little more stylish and sporty, an SUV could be the ideal choice. If you carry tools or equipment around with you, a truck may be more useful than a car. Weigh up the options based on your lifestyle and what you want and need from a new car.

Do you have a preferred make or model in mind?

Some people go through their entire life buying one make of car, while others are much more experimental. If you have a make in mind, and you don’t want to fix something that isn’t broken, use the Internet to look for local dealerships and find cars that suit your budget. You might be thinking about trying a different model, even if you don’t want to change brand. If you’ve always had a Chevy, for example, you can visit dealerships to look at different options or search the Internet for specific models. If you know you want a Malibu, search for a Chevy Malibu for sale, compare prices for used and new vehicles, and set up viewings or test drives. If you’re not set on one make, and you’re open to ideas, it’s wise to book a day off or keep a weekend free to tour showrooms, learn about different models, and see what you can get for your money.

Do you want a new or a used car?

If you’re on the hunt for a new car, it’s worth thinking about whether you want a brand new vehicle straight off the forecourt or a used car. New cars give you the option to customize the vehicle, choose a color, and drive a car that is pristine, but used cars often represent better value for money. If you’re shopping for a car, and you can’t afford a brand new model, looking at used cars will open you up to a much wider range of options. New cars also lose value quickly. As soon as you drive away from the dealership, the value of your car could fall by up to 10 per cent. If you’re buying a used car, always check the vehicle history, take a look at the car in the flesh, and go for a test drive.

There are hundreds of different types of cars out there, so how do you go about finding the one that is best for you? Focus on your budget and the type and make of car you want, and explore all the options. Choose reputable dealers, and always take advantage of the opportunity to take the car for a spin.
