Performance Exhaust Vs. Straight Pipe

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 months ago

If you are looking to update your vehicle, you’re probably debating the benefits of a straight pipe as compared to a performance exhaust system. Here are some of the main considerations to keep in mind as you browse options and research the best exhaust systems.

    Noise Considerations

Performance exhaust systems keep the sound of your engine muffled, so these are the best choice for those who want to avoid being accompanied by a noisy engine. Straight pipes allow the sound to pass through easily, so they loudly announce your presence. The lack of back pressure increases the sound. Some people like the drama and presence of having a noisy ride, but make sure to check up on the noise regulations on cars in your area.

    Style and Personality

Just like how you express your personality and preferences through your car’s color, headlights and more, your exhaust system can show a preference for a flashier style or a classic, simple look. Straight pipes stick out straight from under your car and are typically left unadorned. It is possible to buy extension pieces for straight pipes, to add a flared pipe or make them longer. Performance exhaust systems are known for having a wider range of options to make your car stand out. Take a look at the best exhaust bends and pipes for a variety of shapes and types of pipes.

    Back Pressure

Back pressure refers to the pressure drop that occurs inside exhaust pipes. Because the pressure drops, the engine must produce extra power to push the exhaust out. Some people prefer straight pipes because of the common belief that they reduce back pressure and make engines more efficient. A straight pipe requires a lot of fine tuning, however, and the costs of adjustments can add up.

The choice between performance exhaust systems versus straight pipes comes down to personal preference. Straight pipes come with their own set of unique challenges, however, so be sure to read up on emissions and noise laws before you choose them.
