3 Ways to Get Your Car Ready for a Long Road Trip

Posted by Ben Davidson about 1 years ago

Ah, road trips. There's just something about them that makes life as a whole feel a lot more exciting and adventurous. Almost regardless of who you are, the thought of hitting the open road for several days, if not weeks, at a stretch, is likely to invoke some pretty powerful emotions.

Of course, actually going on a road trip, whether solo, with your friends, or with your family, is one thing. But preparing for the road trip, first, is something else altogether.

Before you can enjoy the thrill of journeying from place to place, and waking up in a new location every day, you've got to get your car primed and ready for the trip. Here are a few tips for doing that.

  1. Install a trailer or roof box

It might be that your vehicle has enough storage space already for all the supplies you need for your road trip. If in doubt, though, don't make do with less stuff than you think you need – install a trailer or roof box, instead.

Cargo carriers roof boxes and trailers can allow you to transport extra essentials with you on your journey, ranging from emergency food supplies and blankets, to gadgets, luxury items, and even emergency fuel in case of a breakdown.

If you're travelling with a group, be sure to get their opinion on the best storage solutions for your car, and see just what it is they want to bring with them on the trip.

  1. Give your vehicle a proper inspection – look at tire pressure, oil levels, etc.

The last thing you want to have happen when you're driving down a long desert route, is for your vehicle to fall victim to an unexpected and catastrophic breakdown.

Before embarking on any road trip at all, be sure to give your vehicle a proper inspection that takes into consideration all the basic elements of good auto maintenance.

Check that your tire pressure is good, and that the tread on your tires is "healthy." Check your oil levels, be sure that all your lights work properly, and – if you haven't driven for a while – go for a quick test drive around town to see that everything handles properly.

This may seem unnecessary, but in all likelihood, you'll feel a lot better about things if you do your due diligence before the trip.

  1. Load up the playlist of your dreams, audiobooks, and pack any other luxuries that may help you

Road trips can be great for all kinds of reasons, but driving for hours and hours at a stretch can also become a "bit" tedious.

If you've got friends or relatives in the car with you, it's likely that their company will keep you entertained for most of the trip – at least, as long as you don't all end up arguing dramatically.

In any case, you should take precautions, and set up your car with the playlist of your dreams, audiobooks, and any luxuries that may help you out for the road – including snacks and drinks.

Some cars will allow you to plug your MP3 player directly into the speaker system, while others will require you to play CDs, or download them onto the internal computer.
