Is A Pickup Truck A Better Vehicle Than A Car?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 1 years ago

We can forget about the practicalities of driving now, especially with the fact that there are so many autonomous vehicles making their way across the horizon. For those people that are looking to get back to some form of simplicity, picking a car can be quite an arduous task. But, with that in mind, the pickup truck is something that is greatly underestimated, not just because it's a way to get back to that simplistic approach to driving, but it also can prove more practical than a standard car. So, with that in mind, let's see if a pickup truck is a better option, and if it's really superior to the modern car.

How Pickup Trucks Can Help You In Everyday Life

Pickup trucks are very malleable, especially if you have a diverse range of activities. Naturally, pickup trucks show their worth when it comes to moving bulky items. If you need to transport a couch when you're moving home, a pickup truck provides ample room, more so than an SUV. And as you can purchase additional accessories to help you with this, such as Tonneau Covers, you've got a very practical piece of machinery to help you in every aspect of your life. And it's not just due to the spacious room in the back, but you can tow anything you need, and it can even give you that opportunity to relax. You can lie on the back, especially if you're in the middle of a long journey and the sun is beating down. It's a very simple thing, but a pickup truck can support all of these.

Are Pickup Trucks Safer Than Cars?

From an obvious perspective, because larger pickup trucks can hold their own on the road, they are generally safer. If you were to get involved in a crash, the heavier vehicle will push the lighter one backward. But what this means for the people in the heavier vehicle is they feel the force less. But in addition to this, from the perspective of the driver, in a pickup truck, they sit up higher. This gives them a better field of view. As such, this gives the driver of a pickup truck the potential to identify hazards further down the road than the driver in a small car. As truck drivers can react quicker because of the expanded field of vision, accidents can be prevented.

The Speed

For any speed freak out there that wants to feel the power in their hands, a pickup truck highlights the fact that they leave most cars in the dust. If you spend a lot of time on two-lane highways, and you struggle to pass with ease, a pickup truck can make this a cinch. Even an average GMC pickup truck will work wonders. The GMC Sierra 1500 has the ability to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds, and if you want to have a frame of reference, this is the equivalent of a Ferrari model from the early 1990s!

The Comfort

Yes, pickup trucks are roomy, and if you've never sat in a modern pickup truck, you might be quite surprised as to the leg room. A four-door F-150 gives you more legroom than a Mercedes luxury sedan! That feeling of being high up in the vehicle makes you feel more comfortable because you are safer, but as pickup trucks can only hold three people, this is where it can be difficult. Naturally, big families are unable to make the most of this. But if you are a lone traveler, it's a perfect piece of comfort.

The Fuel Efficiency

This is where it gets somewhat tricky. Fuel efficiency is a somewhat subjective term. Because the impression of the large pickup truck is that it would guzzle fuel, and it does, you've got to reframe the idea of fuel efficiency. If you were to compare it to a standard vehicle, then a pickup truck would lose every single time, but when you look at what a pickup truck can do in comparison to a vehicle, you may very well look at the data and see a car come out on top, butts if you are two-way a car down with luggage and all the various accessories, the pickup truck will be able to complete the job easier i.e. complete fewer trips. So you've got to think about the fuel efficiency in terms of the work being done by the vehicle, not necessarily the miles being covered.

Will A Pickup Truck Actually Work For You?

Yes, pickup trucks are fast, spacious, and you can use them for pretty much anything, but will they work for you? It all depends on you as the caliber of driver. Safety is one of those components that are always being tested by car companies, and while automatic braking and airbags have made the modern vehicle safer than old pickups, there are modern trucks that have a lot of these additions. But also, if you intend to drive off-road or during the winter, will you feel the benefit? In fact, most pickup trucks are too large for off-road activities. pickup trucks are usually touted as a way to go off-road and put the pedal to the metal, but due to the sheer size of pickup trucks, this doesn't pay off. And you've also got to think about the fact that a pickup truck is quite a sight, and so, does this mean you've got to take extra steps to secure your vehicle in case it is targeted by thieves?

Is a pickup truck really superior to a car? On the surface, yes it is. On the other hand, it all depends on what you will use the vehicle for. It certainly serves many purposes, in fact, more than a standard vehicle. But if you are on the lookout for a vehicle to stand the test of time, or can help you pick you up and road with some style, a pickup truck ticks all the boxes. Is it superior to a car? Only in some ways.
