7 Ways To Keep The Cost Of Your Car Down

Posted by Ben Davidson about 5 months ago

In life, there are always going to be things that we need to pay out for. That’s just the way it goes. You’ll always have bills and expenses -no matter how hard you try to cut back. However, it’s safe to say that there are some areas that we’re all going to spend on a lot more than others. Because we all have likes and dreams and passions, and you’ll generally find that people spend their money on things that matter most to them. And this is often why you may find yourself investing a lot of money in your car. Now, you may need it and you may want to pick the best possible model so that you can stay safe on the road, and that’s great. However, as you’re doing that, you may also find that you’re spending way too much money on your car.

Now, you may quite often find that your car will always be a big source of expenditure. This is because of the number of things that you do need to pay out on – the car itself, insurance, any taxes, fuel, maintenance - the list goes on. However, you may find that you’re spending hundreds or thousands when you perhaps shouldn’t be. Or don’t want to be, at least. So let’s take a look at how you can keep the cost of your car down.

    1. Buy It Outright

The first step here is probably one of the biggest, and it’s to actually buy the car – rather than lease or get a finance deal. Why? Because you’ll over pay. On either interest with finance, or just the huge cost altogether with leasing when you don’t actually own the car. Saving up is best.

    2. Buy It Used

Again, on the same lines, when you’re buying the car, you’ll find that it’s best to buy it used. Why? Because you get more bang for your buck. If you buy a brand new car, you lose money the second you drive it home. But you can often get a good deal with a used car, and it’ll save you money.

    3. Drive Carefully

It seems obvious, but we don’t always adhere to it – because driving carefully can save you money. If you drive recklessly, you may be at risk of having an accident. And not only that, but you’ll wear the car down quickly. Careful driving can help to preserve the life of the car, and reduce how much you’ll need to spend on it!

    4. Drive Less

This one is super simple but a lot harder to do when you rely on a car. However, if you know that you really do want to cut back on the cost of driving, then choosing not to drive as much is really going to help. Because, as you would expect, when you drive less you’re using less fuel. But not only that, your car will experience less wear and tear too, which always helps.

    5. Maintain It

But then also, you really do need to be able to maintain your car too. If you want to spend as little money on the car as possible in the long run, regular maintenance can help. Whether you just need to check the engine, or you need to source the right BMW E46 parts, you can keep major problems at bay this way. Even if it does seem like you’re spending money to save money!

    6. Trade In Regularly

The next thing that’s going to be able to help you here, is the idea of selling your car and replacing it regularly. When you trade it in on a regular basis, you’ll find that it’s much easier for you to keep the value in the car and not lose too much money from it. However, this is something that you do need to keep on top of. Along with the points above, you’ll find that you can keep money in the car, as long as you’re trading in every six months to a year, or so.

    7. Prioritize Value

Now, this final point is quite simple (and somewhat obvious), but it’s also important. More often than not, we see cars as status symbols. But, you may find that you end up overpaying for your car, and spending too much on it on a monthly basis, because of that. So instead, you need to focus on value. When you’re looking at getting the best car for your budget, you’ll always be able to keep the costs down, and to a level that you can afford.
