Things To Have In Place Before Selling Your Car

Posted by Ben Davidson about 5 months ago

If you’re getting ready to sell your car, whether it’s because you’re upgrading or even if you’ve just decided to get rid of your car, for example if you’re moving to a different country, then you may be wondering where to get started if you’ve never done it before, so here are a few tips from us to help you get started.

    Get your documents organized:

When you buy a car, you’re expected to have different documents handed over to you regarding the car, such as the information about the car’s history, safety records, and other details, so make sure that before you even think of listing the car for sale that you have all of these in place as it’s illegal to try and sell your car without this stuff in the first place.

    Get a safety check:

Not only would you not consider buying a car that has no evidence to say how safe it is or when/if it last was involved in an accident, but you can get yourself in some serious trouble if you do sell a car that’s been involved in an accident and may have potential safety issues that you haven’t disclosed to your new buyer, so it’s really not worth the risk.

If someone buys your car and you didn’t disclose any issues, then a case against you would probably be able to find you guilty pretty quickly when determining fault in case of an accident, so it’s really important that you do get a safety check for your car, and this something you should be regularly doing anyway, even if you don’t plan on selling anytime soon.

    Check the market prices:

Cars are not like houses or other big sale items that increase in value over time and they actually lose their value, so although you may be hoping to get close to what you paid for your 5 year old car, the chances of that happening are slim.

Of course, this doesn’t mean cars are cheap items, you’ll still get a good amount for it, so just have a look around the market to see what similar makes and models are selling for so that you have an idea on how to approach the cost side of things.

Give the car a good cleaning:

Just as you would when selling anything, you want to make sure it’s well presented, so even if your car isn’t what you’d consider dirty or badly maintained, you should still make sure that the car is perfectly clean and tidy when you’re listing it for sale so that you’ll be increasing your chances of selling it to any potential buyers.

It’s also a good idea to give it a further cleaning once you’ve sold it, even if it’s just as a nice gesture because it will help out the new owner and make the experience of buying a second hand car better for them overall.
