What to do with my car after an accident?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 3 months ago
If you’ve been in a car accident, you’re probably feeling scared, stressed and anxious, especially if you were injured and have to take time off work. If this is the case, you might need an injury lawyer (there are plenty if you had a car accident in Tucson). Another factor that often causes concern after a car accident is what happens to your vehicle. Is it safe to use? Will you need to get expensive repairs? Here are some of the options, depending on the damage.

    It’s written off
One of the things that may happen after a car accident is your insurance company might tell you that your car is a write-off. This means that the accident caused so much damage that repairs will not be economical or safe. This might be upsetting news, especially if your car is quite new or had sentimental value. However, your insurance company will calculate what the car was worth before the accident, and you will get this money back. It might be less time consuming, too.

    Get it repaired
If your car hasn’t been written off – great! But don’t celebrate too early. It probably still has some significant damages and will need repairs. Many people debate whether to repair or sell after an accident, as sometimes it can be more cost effective to sell your car and replace it. Knowing your car insurance policy will be a great help here, as you can work out what the insurance will cover. Make sure you consider issues like rental cars, which may or may not be included whilst your car is being repaired. If the policy includes a rental, repairing your car might be straight forward and the way to go.

    Sell it
However, during your research you may discover that repairing your car isn’t economically sensible. For example, your car may significantly lose value after being repaired, or the new parts might be expensive. You might have to pay for a rental car for a couple of weeks, which can add up quickly. So, selling it might be the best option. Whether you do this through a company or privately, you could get a good chunk of money that can be put towards your new vehicle. Make sure you have all the documents and price information ready to hand before selling, though. A thorough vehicle clean can be useful too.

    Get it checked
Depending on the severity of the accident, your car may have no visible damage and doesn’t seem to need any repairs. You’re one of the lucky ones. However, you always need to inform your insurance company after an accident and you certainly need to get the car checked over for any damages. Whilst the exterior may be in tact, there could be issues with the breaks or tires that aren’t visible. You’d always make an appointment with a healthcare professional after an accident in case of any injuries, so you should do the same with your car. You need to make sure that it’s in safe working order before you drive it again. Otherwise, another accident is waiting to happen.
