Five Things You Need To Restore A Classic Car

Posted by Ben Davidson about 8 months ago

There are so many people who are out there dreaming of iconic cars to buy and restore to their original best. Whether you have always dreamed of this or you are in your retirement, the idea of that original car you’ve always wanted could be a rather romantic one.

The thing is, there is a lot to consider when it comes to choosing a car that you could spend a fortune on restoring. You have to consider the project itself, and what you plan to do with the vehicle after you’ve restored it. It would help if you thought about what material you want to use to upholster the entire car, where to find the best ceramic paint coating for cars to make it look good on the outside, and which tires to use to replace the old ones. The right decisions need to be made here, and this project is going to be a successful one if you don’t waste your money on the options for restoration. Below, we’ve got five things that you need to restore your car to its former glory.

  • Value Retention. There are tons of old cars that are for sale and need restoring out there, but you have to choose the vehicle that will be worth something if you plan to sell it. Don't go for a model just because you’re in love with a particular car brand. Choose the one that will give you the right sale if that’s what you’re restoring a car for.

  • Watch For Rust. Rust? It’s not good for a car. The chassis can be eaten alive by rust, and if that’s the case, you have a lot of reparation in front of you. Buying a rust bucket of a car requires you to strip the car right back, sandblast it and cut off the irreparable sections of the metal. You might be able to buy replacement parts, but if you can’t, you can fabricate them. Make sure that you have the time for this, though. Rust repair is costly and busy work!

  • The Car Needs To Start. You may choose a car that doesn't start, but if you do, you’re going to shave off some time and money spent on restoring the car. A non-running vehicle is a significant financial risk, and you may see that the worst-case scenario is that the car cannot be fixed again. Always choose one that starts if you can - to save yourself the money.

  • Can You Get The Right Parts? A restoration requires the right parts to make sure that you can fix it up. There’s no use in buying an old car to restore if you can’t replace the car parts that you are renovating in the first place. This is a project that you want to run smoothly, and it starts with a car that will actually run!

Ask The Experts. When in doubt, ask for help. Find someone who is better at this than you are and ask them for their advice. There are people out there who are fantastic at restoration, and you can ask for their feedback. It’s the best way to make sure that you can drive the car you restore.
