Why Driving Is Never Idle Time

Posted by Ben Davidson about 9 months ago

For anybody who is used to the commuting routine, driving is an essential part of work. Whether you work in an office or you’re out to meet clients, your car plays an essential to your day-to-day performance. But, sitting at the steering wheel when you’ve got places to go can feel like a waste of time. You might be tempted to spend the time in the car mentally planning your next sales presentation or wondering how to pitch a new idea to your boss. Perhaps, you even rehearse important speeches as you drive. As a busy professional, you can’t afford to remain idle while you’re driving around.

However, it would be foolish to assume that you are passive when you drive. In fact, with hundreds of vehicles on the road at the same time, describing your driving experience as idle time is the most inaccurate statement you could make. So you might have a lot to prepare for work, but when you’re driving to the office, there is no time to work.

Nobody is driving you

It would be nice to sit back and finish your work emails while your car drives you safely to your destination. Unfortunately, even though science fiction has promised flying cars and robotic technology, we’re not there in an era where self-driving cars are safe for everyday use. The technology exists already, but trials have shown that there is still a lot of work to do. As such, as long as we continue to rely on drivers to get from A to B, your commuting time needs to be fully engaged.

Manufacturers have mentioned plans to deliver fully-autonomous driverless vehicles in the future. However, when it comes to insurance and infrastructures, it seems that the future of driverless could focus on public transport and delivery only, where routes are pre-mapped and can be automated.

Your safety tech won’t save your life

Road accidents are showing no signs of disappearing despite the increase of driving assistive technology. The truth is that sensors, read or front camera, and automatic braking can only do so much. As a driver, you need to rely as much on yourself, your perception of the road, and your reflexes as you rely on your vehicle. Indeed, while sensors can inform you when a car is getting too close to yours, observing another driver’s behaviour can provide valuable information that can prevent an accident. You can spot dangerous behaviours on the road before it’s too late and you need to seek help immediately after a dramatic collision. A vehicle that doesn’t stay within the lanes can be avoided if you trust your observation over the sensor device. Why so? Because as a driver, you’ll see risks before your sensor does.

Stop thinking!

Whether you’ve got a tricky project or your boss is making things unnecessarily hard for you, thinking about work worries while you drive only achieves one thing. It increases your stress levels. The more stressed you are, the more at risk you are of having a panic attack while at the steering wheel. You don’t need to become a pro of relaxation, but it can be helpful to learn to block your thoughts while you’re driving.

Professionals are keen to multitask to gain time and boost their performance. However, when you’re driving, you need to keep your mind entirely focused on the road. You are still the only person who can avoid an accident. No tech backup can be as helpful as a mindful driver is.
