Avoid these mistakes when driving long distance

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 months ago

Driving long distance isn’t all about glorious sunsets, stunning landscapes and looking for adventure on the open road. Even though we’d like it to be! Driving long distance is really about responsibility, getting to your destination on time and in one piece. Sadly, thousands of road accidents each year are caused by distracted driving or those who don’t take the dangers of the open road seriously.

The last thing anyone wants is to find themselves injured in a car accident that wasn’t their fault, click the link if you’re looking for a lawyer for those involved in a car accident. So, drivers must take steps to ensure not just their own safety, but the safety of others on the road is the priority. And to do so, you need to avoid making these mistakes when you're driving long distance.

Failing to plan your route

Long distance driving isn’t like the movies. You need to actually plan your route and more importantly your stops. Even if you don’t have a specific destination in mind, you still need to know where you’re going to stop to stretch your legs and the distance between gas stations. Which brings me onto my next point.

Putting off getting gas

We've all been there – played chicken with the fuel gauge. You're convinced it's got miles and miles left in the tank, but it's not until you grind to a halt on a dirt road miles from a gas station or telephone with a signal, that you realise how wrong you were. If you pass a gas station, you shouldn't miss an opportunity to fill up. Even if your tank is relatively full, you should consider filling up your jerrycan (which you will have remembered to bring with you) instead.

Allowing yourself to be distracted

Distracted driving can be fatal. Not just for you, but some innocent family minding their own business. Don't allow yourself to become distracted by noisy friends, crackling radio, smartphone notifications or eating behind the wheel. If you find your concentration lapsing, pull over.

Not bringing enough food

Again, failing to plan properly could leave you with some serious hunger pangs on the road. While I’m certain you’re unlikely to starve, but you may want to plan your meals and your snacks for when you’re behind the wheel. Avoid too much of a good thing, and mix up your greasy fast food choices with light snacks and fresh fruit and veggies. This will keep your energy levels up and you’ll probably have less stomach trouble.

And finally…Travelling with the wrong person

Back seat drivers. Complaining about music. Not offering to help with the driving. Feet up on your dashboard. Travelling with the wrong person can make or break your long-distance road trip. So, make sure you travel with the right person!
