Revealed: The hidden injuries of car accidents

After a car accident, it's difficult to ever imagine life returning to normal. Especially if you're now suffering from some devastating injuries. The kinds of injuries that can be sustained in a car accident usually depend on the severity of the crash. However, that's not to say that even the least life-threatening of injuries can't be incredibly debilitating. Click here for what to expect physically after a car accident

You're still going to need plenty of time to rest, recuperate and recover from your ordeal and potentially pursue a personal injury claim to help get you and your family back on your feet after extended time off work. But did you know that some injuries take time to manifest after your initial accident?

These injuries might not be apparent straight away, and may not be immediately recognised whilst you’re in pain with other injuries like broken bones or fractures. Here we’ll take a look at the hidden injuries of car accidents.

The nature of a car accident means that your neck is effectively whipped forwards and then backwards violently and faster than the rest of the body. This kind of violent movement can cause extensive damage to the muscles and the tendons in your neck. In many cases, whiplash will heal by itself, however, it may also need extensive care and treatment if your case is particularly severe. If you have neck pain, stiffness, muscle spasming and difficulty moving your head then seek medical attention.

Psychological injuries

It’s normal to focus on your physical health after being involved in a crash. Visible injuries such as bleeding, broken bones and dislocated limbs are much easier to spot and treat. However, psychological injuries are much harder to treat and can even go unnoticed for years. Signs of PTSD, difficulty sleeping, avoidance, anxiety, irritability, nightmares and of course depression are all common signs of psychological trauma. Reach out to a doctor if you're suffering from any of these symptoms.

Musculoskeletal injuries

Believe it or not, musculoskeletal injuries can be just as painful as a broken bone. However, they're not as easy to fix and they can take several days for them to manifest and for the pain to take hold. Ripped, ligaments strained tendons and torn muscles can make even the simplest of movements excruciating and near impossible to complete. Soft tissue damage can create life-long problems if it goes untreated.

Brain injuries

You don't have to make physical contact with something to suffer a brain injury. Difficulties with memory, migraines, blurred vision even hearing impairment. From concussion to something much more sinister, symptoms like these should never be ignored.

Final thoughts…

If you’ve been involved in a car accident that wasn’t your fault, reach out to a PI lawyer as soon as possible.
