How to Find the Balance Between Confident and Cautious Driving

Posted by Ben Davidson about 7 months ago

Driving confidence is something that will mostly come from experience, but just because you’ve known how to drive for 10, 20, or even 30 years doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still exercise caution. Even though it’s something that the majority of people do every day, motor vehicle accidents still account for a top-three cause of death across all age groups. However, you don’t want to be too cautious or timid on the road, and that is why you must find the perfect balance between confidence and caution.

Do Not Trust Other Drivers

It doesn’t matter how cautious and aware you are on the road if someone else isn’t. Being overly confident means there’s a risk of being involved in an accident with a reckless driver, and this will mean insurance claims and a meeting with a car accident lawyer at the very least.

It’s essential to recognize the signs of reckless driving so you can avoid it. Speeding, failing to yield, looking to get around cars ahead of them, and a hand stuck to the horn are all signs you should take it easy stay away from them.

Take Additional Lessons

You may be confident driving around your town, especially if it’s something you’ve done for years. However, whether by circumstance or reluctance, you’ve never driven further than that. You don’t know how to drive on the highway, and you’re nervous every time someone asks you to do so.

Many driving instructors will offer highway driving courses, sometimes known as Pass-Plus. This will give you the confidence you need to drive along the highway while still understanding how to be cautious in certain situations.

Be Prepared Wherever You Go

Driving somewhere new can also make you nervous, and because you’re unsure where you are going, you might drive too slow and cautiously. This can irritate other drivers, and even cause an accident.

When driving somewhere that you have never been before, it’s essential to be prepared. You should understand the route, the distance, and how long it will take so you can account for gas refills or breaks. If possible, you should also do a dry run, so you know exactly where you need to go on the day.

The Destination Isn’t Going Anywhere

Impatient drivers are unsafe drivers, but this impatience is not just based around road rage. Drivers with too much confidence can also be impatient, and this puts everyone at risk. One thing speeding drivers don’t consider is that the destination will still be there, and at the very best, you will save yourself five or so minutes by upping the speed.

The same goes for reckless pull-outs at a junction. Being too eager to get out could cause problems for you and other drivers, so even if you feel you’re in a hurry, wait until you are sure it’s safe and exercise caution while demonstrating the confidence expected of qualified drivers.

The Perfect Balance

You never stop learning how to drive, and while there will be some journeys you can do on autopilot, you should still remember that the road conditions can change faster than you expect. Wherever you go, be confident, but not cocky, and take care without being overly nervous.
