Why Are My Tires Wearing Out So Quickly?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 17 days ago

Noticed that your tires are wearing out fast? Tires can be expensive to buy and so it’s important to get to the bottom of the problem so that you’re not constantly forking out money on replacements. Here are just a few possible reasons as to why your tires may be wearing out.

Over-inflated/underinflated tires

If the tire pressure isn’t right, you could find that your tires are wearing out more quickly. Both under-inflated and over-inflated tires can pose a problem. Under-inflated tires tend to wear down around the edges of the tread, while over-inflated tires wear out in the centre of the tread. You can usually find information on the optimum tire pressure for your vehicle on a sticker in the door or in the vehicle manual – check this tire pressure to ensure that your tires are pumped up correctly.

Wheel misalignment

If the wheels aren’t aligned properly, you could find that your tires start to experience a serious amount of wear. You may also notice steering difficulties or unusual noises such as squeals in certain cases. Wheels could become misaligned after hitting a bump such as a pothole or kerb at speed. In other cases, they may become misaligned over time as a result of everyday driving. You’ll want to look for an auto repair company that offers wheel alignment services to fix this problem as soon as possible. You may find that only one wheel is misaligned, or you could find that multiple wheels need adjusting.

Worn out suspension

Issues with suspension can also lead to uneven tire wear. The wheel alignment could fluctuate, causing different parts of the tire to become worn. Suspension problems are likely to result in a very bumpy ride, plus you may notice that steering is affected (especially at low speeds). A repair service that specializes in suspension will be able to repair this problem.

Not rotating tires

It’s recommended that you rotate your tires every 5000 to 7500 miles. This is because in most cars, certain positioned tires will wear out faster than others. In a front-wheel drive car, the front wheels do all the pulling and heavy work and tend to wear out faster. In a rear-wheel drive car, the rear wheels tend to wear out faster because they’re doing all the pushing. By rotating tires, you ensure that you can help to evenly distribute the wear, which can help you to get more life out of your tires.

Carrying unnecessary weight

Tires are more likely to wear out when you’re carrying extra weight. Keeping objects such as tools and prams in a car is not recommended unless you’re taking them somewhere to use them. For instance, if you’re taking a day trip to the beach with the family, you don’t need to be carrying boxes of heavy work tools in the back. Similarly, carrying an empty trailer or roofbox could cause tires to wear. You’ll also use more fuel while driving with this excess weight.
