Is Your Car Crying Oil? 5 Signs It Is Giving Up the Ghost

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 months ago

You may find that you are investing a lot of money into your car to keep it running. Or you may hate your car, but you don't have any cash to spend on a newer one. And while cars are more robust than ever, sometimes our cars can pick up new, and healthy habits, that are warning signs that it's about to give up the ghost. Let's show you some.

Numerous Gremlins

Constant bugs in the system are frustrating. And if your car is starting to cut out, you may find that there are little issues that cause big problems. If you take it to your mechanic, and they tell you it's an electrical problem, the solution may be very simple, that you replace the alternator, starter, or battery. You can purchase bond batteries and numerous components easily, but if your car has had everything replaced, and you don't have the finances to dig any deeper into the issue, it's probably time to give it up.

It Is Guzzling Too Much Oil

If you see oil leaking on a constant basis, or everything that you are putting in is not being used by the car, or you are getting a lot of smoke, this could be a sign that the internals are on their way out. If you haven't changed your oil for a long time, this is the first port of call, if not, you need to visit your mechanic.

Problems With Your Timing Belt

This is incredibly important as your timing belt synchronizes your engine so the valves can open and close, and interference with this can stop your car. And if there are problems with your timing belt, you may need a new engine. Make sure that you replace your timing belt every 50,000 miles approximately.

The Exterior Is Starting To Rot

One of the more common telltale signs that your car is on its way out but if you've replaced the hood and the trunk, rot isn't too much of an issue. However, if rust has made its way into the shock towers, the suspension mounting points, or, more concerningly, the frame, your car is probably on its way out.

The Dashboard Is Lit Up Like Christmas!

The simplest way to check if there's anything wrong with your car is to actually look down beyond your steering wheel from time-to-time! You don't necessarily get all the information from the dashboard, but you can plug your car into an OBD-II diagnostics meter and get a far better insight. After all, prevention is better than cure!

If you’re ever concerned about the safety of your car, the quickest thing for you to do would be to take it to a mechanic. But if you've already done this, and the fact of the matter is that you are just delaying the inevitable, now might be the time for you to give up your car. We get it, it's a heartbreaking thing to do when it's your first love. But you have to know when to switch off the life support.
