Protecting Your Car’s Paintwork

Posted by Ben Davidson about 3 months ago

Over time, paintwork on cars can become damaged if not protected. This could make your car look less attractive and affect its value. Fixing paintwork can be expensive - often preventative care is the best measure. Below are just some of the ways in which you can protect your paintwork.

Clean your car regularly

Allowing dirt to sit on your car will corrode the paint. Bird droppings, tree saps and squashed insects can be particularly damaging. Take the time to clean your car every two weeks in order to prevent any damage from dirt.

What is the best way to clean your car? Ideally you should clean it yourself using a non-abrasive sponge or cloth and specialist car shampoo. Automatic car washes can be convenient, but can risk creating permanent swirl marks due to the harsh brushes. You should avoid using household cleaning chemicals that aren’t specifically made for cars as some of them could corrode the paint.

Add wax or sealant

Waxes and sealants won’t just make your car shinier - they can also provide an added layer of protection to your paint. These should be applied after cleaning your car.

It’s important to use the right product for your car. Rims will require a separate specialist polish. Read instructions to know exactly how much you should apply and use an appropriate cloth.

Invest in protective film

For an even more durable layer of protection, you could try coating your car in XPEL paint protection film. This is a transparent coating that keeps your paintwork completely intact much like a screen protector on a phone. While this film isn’t cheap, it can be worth using on more expensive cars - particularly if you want to maintain a lot of their value.

Protective film should be installed by an expert. It can be very fiddly - by hiring a pro to do it, you can be sure that the finish will be smooth and seamless.

Be careful where you park

The best place to park is off-road in a garage. This will protect your paintwork from weather damage, bird droppings, tree sap, vandalism or collisions with cars.

Of course, not everyone has this luxury. If you have to park outdoors, try not to park under a tree or in constant direct sunlight. You’re more likely to get bumps and scratches when parking on the curb on a busy road (plus you may be an easier target for vandals). If you’ve got a valuable car, consider whether it’s possible to rent out a driveway, garage or parking space in your neighbourhood.

Take out scratch and dent insurance

It’s possible to take out coverage against scratches and dents. This could allow you to more easily afford repairs if you do experience a bump or scratch. Such insurance could be expensive depending on where you park and the value of your car, so bear this in mind. It could be worth shopping around to get the best quote.
