Are Your Old Brake Pads Putting You At Risk?

Posted by Ben Davidson about 4 months ago

Your brakes are the most important safety feature on your car, which is why it’s vital that you stay on top of maintenance. Unfortunately, a lot of car owners leave their brake pads for too long without replacing them, putting themselves and other road users in danger. Sometimes, this is down to laziness but more often than not, it’s because people don’t realize their brake pads need to be replaced because they don’t know what signs to watch out for. Here’s how you can work out whether your brakes need to be replaced.

Get A Regular Service

The easiest way to make sure that our brakes are always in good condition is to get your car serviced. During the service, all of the safety features on your car will be checked, including the brakes, and if there are any issues, they can be fixed there and then. Follow the link for additional info about servicing and what an average service includes. Skipping your service could have disastrous results, so you should have one carried out around once a year at least. Driving around with worn brake pads could prove fatal, but your service can help prevent any accidents.

Listen For Strange Noises

Strange noises when driving your car are always a cause for concern. If you hear a squealing noise, you need to check your brake pads straight away. You will notice a noise, which stops when you apply the brakes, and this is usually the built-in wear indicators that come on most modern brakes. They are designed to make a horrible noise so you know that your brake pads are too worn down, so don’t ignore it.

A clicking noise is another common indication that your brake pads are damaged. When they get worn down or damaged in some way, they may come loose from the housing they click into or if they are fixed with bolts and pins, these can come loose too. When they start wobbling around as you drive, they will make a clicking noise.

Pay Attention To Your Stopping Distance

Paying attention to whether your brakes actually work properly is one of the easiest ways to see if your brake pads need to be replaced. If you notice that your car is taking longer to come to a complete stop, that’s bad news. If you end up hitting somebody as a result, you’ll have to make some expensive repairs. The thing is, brake pads are not that expensive to replace, so don’t think that you are saving money by keeping your old ones in for longer than you should.

Watch For Vibrations

When you apply your brakes, the pedal shouldn’t vibrate. If it does, that’s usually a sign that your brake pads are worn down. This usually happens because the resin that holds the brake pedal together melts due to heat and then spreads unevenly over the surface of the brake pad, causing the pedal to vibrate when pressed.

Worn down brake pads can be incredibly dangerous, so make sure that you don’t neglect maintenance and you get them replaced when necessary.
