Touring Motorcycles: Choosing One That Works for You

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 years ago

People talk a lot about road trips, often in reference to traveling in a car or another multi-person vehicle. Taking a road trip as a family or with friends in one vehicle is certainly an experience, but there are other ways to take a road trip. Motorbikes are amazing for touring, whether you set out on the road alone or you gather together a group of riders to go exploring. They can offer you even more freedom on the road compared to a car, camper, or other vehicles you might take on a road trip. There are plenty of options for touring bikes, so there are a few things you might want to think about before buying.

Consider Your Ambitions

The first thing that you might want to think about when choosing a touring bike is what you want it for. Where do you want to go and what types of journeys do you want to go on? The length of your journeys and the terrain that you want to navigate will dictate certain aspects of the motorcycle that you choose, such as the size. If you want to take longer trips, you might be looking for a larger bike that can hold more luggage. You'll want to think about comfort too, especially for long tours.

Think About Maintenance

Maintaining your bike is going to be necessary, both when you're at home and when you're out on the road. You might want to consider how easy it is to maintain any bike that you choose. You could find that getting parts for your Honda Deauville NT700V is pretty easy, but maybe some bikes are a little more difficult to source parts for. Another thing to think about might be how easy it is to maintain the bike yourself, especially when you're touring, and whether you'll end up needing a lot of professional help to keep it in good condition.

Keep Speed in Mind

When you're looking at touring bikes, perhaps you'll be thinking about how fast they can go. However, consider whether being able to travel faster is really a priority. Speeding along the open road can be a thrill when you're touring, but part of the fun is also getting to enjoy the landscape and stopping along the way too. You'll also still be subject to speed limits when you're traveling along motorways and other roads, so you'll only be able to go so fast anyway.

Will You Be Riding Alone?

You should also think about whether you'll be riding solo on your trips. If you're planning on taking a passenger, that means you will probably need a more powerful bike to take the extra weight. Another thing to take into account is if you'll be going with any other riders. Will you be able to keep up with the others when riding the bike that you choose? Touring with others can be a lot of fun, but not if you're at the back of the pack.

When you're looking for a touring motorcycle, think about the types of journeys you want to go on. It will help to inform your choice so you can choose the best bike.
