3 Essential Rules when Buying a First Motorcycle

Posted by Ben Davidson about 2 months ago
Buying your first motorcycle is an important event and a lifelong dream for many. It can be exciting, but it’s also very important that you choose wisely as this will affect your experience as a rider.

You want your first bike to be one you will enjoy and allow you to do the things you wanted to do. Not all bikes are created the same, and some are better for different environments. You also have to consider things like maintenance, ease of use, performance, and more. Let’s take a look at a few essential rules when buying your first motorcycle.

New Vs Used

One of the first dilemmas that need to be solved when buying a motorcycle is going for a new or used one. Both options have their advantages but it’s usually a better choice to go for a slightly used bike. There will be little difference between a brand-new bike and one that was properly maintained or was refurbished, and it’ll cost much less. It should still be under warranty, and since different people use bikes differently, you might be able to find one with low mileage.

If you’re going to buy a used bike, we suggest you buy it from a reputable seller. It would be better to go with a dealership, and preferably the same brand as your bike.

If you’re going to buy a Suzuki, for instance, go for a Suzuki bikes UK dealership with a wide selection of used and new models like GLM Suzuki. They will usually have more knowledge on the bike and will be able to serve you better if there are any issues with it. They’ll have no problem finding parts for you and you’ll have a better service in general.

Prioritize Comfort

You might have had your sights on a particular bike, but you don’t know how much you’ll enjoy it until you actually ride it. It’s much more important to go for comfort than looks or performance. Too many beginners make the mistake of going for a race-rep bike and never quite get in the groove because they’re uncomfortable. You need to go with a bike that will give you a pretty neutral seating position, a good range of motion, and great visibility.

Don’t Assume that You Know What You Need

People often have an idea of what type of bike they want. Some will assume that they want speed and performance when they really need a serviceable bike that will give them the power needed to deal with urban traffic and have a little fun on the side.

Some people, for instance, will fall in love with the romantic idea of a cruiser only to realize how cumbersome they can be. They might also be disappointed with the performance.

The reality is that some bikes are very specialized, and it could be a better option to go with a standard bike at first. This will give you more flexibility and give you the chance to know what kind of riding you like doing the most.

These are all things that you need to be on the lookout for when buying your first motorcycle. We would suggest that you speak with as many experts as you can and find a dealership that will walk you through the process of buying the perfect bike for you.
