4 Major Decisions When Buying Car Insurance

Posted by Ben Davidson about 4 months ago

_If you are going to _drive a car_, you will of course always need to have car insurance. Not only is it a legal requirement, it is also something that will protect you financially should you ever find yourself in some kind of accident or crash on the road. Having car insurance helps give you peace of mind. But there are a few things you need to bear in mind when you are choosing car insurance, so let’s take a look at some of the major decisions that will affect your choice of cover.

_What Level Of Coverage?

_There are actually many different types of car insurance, each of which gives you a different level of coverage. You need to be aware of these in detail to ensure you make the right decision around what kind of car insurance you are going to need. You need to ask yourself: _how much car insurance do I need_? Do you need to have uninsured motorist coverage, in case you get hit by an uninsured driver? Do you just want bodily injury liability? You need to work out how much coverage you actually need before you sign your name on the dotted line.

_Black Box Or No Black Box?

_These days, there are many insurance companies which will give you the option of having a black box installed in your vehicle for a while. This is a means of keeping your insurance premiums lower. Essentially, the black box measures exactly how fast you go and whether you go over any speed limits or do anything else which could be troublesome. If you stick to all the rules, it will keep your premiums low, and the insurance company will be able to tell thanks to the black box. It’s up to you whether to do this or not, but it’s worth considering.

_Renew Or Change?

_When it comes around to renewal time on your car insurance, you need to make sure that you once again consider all of your options. It’s no use simply allowing it to roll over, as for all you know you are not going to be getting the best deal for the year to come. You need to double-check that you are on the best policy for you, which just means checking with other insurers again. If you let the _renewal lapse_ on its own, you are giving up this control.

_How Much Voluntary Excess?

_You will always be given an option regarding voluntary excess on your car insurance. This simply refers to the amount of any claim that you would have to pay out before the insurance company starts paying you for the claim. All companies have their own minimum voluntary excess, but it’s up to you how high it goes. The higher it goes, the lower your premiums - but of course, you could be caught out if you do have to make a claim at any point.

_With those questions answered, you should feel much more empowered to buy car insurance.
